Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting problems in the field
DOs and DON'Ts for the technicians
- Remind the tech that they should NEVER operate any equipment without a functioning temperature gauge.
- Technicians are to NEVER use diesel as a cleaner. Using diesel as a cleaner will result in explosion and destruction to property and person.
- Remind the technician to report ALL breakages and damages to the Branch Manager to replenish inventory.
- Remind the technician to NEVER leave ANY job unfinished without speaking to the Operations team and getting their confirmation to leave the site.
eTechnician or Surveyors App issues
- Always make sure that you are connected to the internet and you have sufficient storage on your device. You can confirm an internet connection by opening the web browser and successfully accessing any two websites (Yahoo, Google, etc) on the internet.
- If the app runs slow on your device, consider removing or cleaning out old photos and videos to improve speed and processing power.
- Always use android phones and tablets to download and use the app. The App DOES NOT work on iphones or ipads.
- Always make sure you have the latest version of the app. Remember to update the app regularly.
- Reset the app and try again: Power down your phone or tablet. Restart the device and relaunch the app.
- If the above options do not work, please call Operations right away with specific information and screenshots of the problem or issue. Please take photos on your phone manually and complete the jobs as needed. Send pictures and other information to the Company once you have internet connectivity again.

Equipment in the field- Troubleshooting by technician
Rollers
Roller Engine
- Throttle Cable breaks: The cable runs through the throttle body and attaches to it. Remove the two bolts attaching the cable to the roller and remove cable in one piece and replace it back how it was. [Pic of throttle cable]
- FWD & Reverse Cable breaks: Remove the cover, the bolts attaching the cable to the roller and remove cable in one piece and replace it back how it was. [Pic of FWD & reverse cable]
- Clogged water hose and water pipe: Use the tank cleaning rod to remove debris from the trunk. If the hose is too clogged, try flushing it with water and if that doesn’t work, replace the hose.
- Engine won’t start:
Make sure there’s fuel in the tank. Push the choke lever back, turn the roller on and start the roller. As soon as the roller starts running, push the choke lever forward and let it idle for a few minutes until it warms up, without moving the roller. [Pic of push choke] Change the spark plugs
Tools required: Wrenches, socket set, screwdrivers, replacement spare part, carburetor cleaning fluid, rags, relevant nuts & bolts, tank cleaning rods, reservoir to flush clogged pipes
Tar Kettle and Torch
- Tar Valve and/or Flow Pipe clogged: Heat the kettle and then use a tank cleaning rod to clear out the debris.Check the regulator volume knob and make sure it’s turned up.
Check the propane tank for fuel and make sure the valve is opened all the way. Check for a leaking or busted gas pipe. Check the orifice for clogging- blow on it or use the specific orifice cleaning tool to gently and carefully remove the debris. Check the hoses, valve and gauge for leaks and breakages. Check for loose screws or bolts on the heat assembly body and CAREFULLY tighten where required. Check for clogged venturi and use the same orifice tool to gently clean it, if needed. If all above steps fail to resolve the issue, replace the regulator.
- The kettle/torch is not working/ heating at all/ getting fired => Regulator stopped working:
Check the regulator volume knob and make sure it’s turned up. Check the propane tank for fuel and make sure the valve is opened all the way. Check for a leaking or busted hose. Check the volume knob on the torch and make sure it’s turned up.
- Check that the torch is in the right place and the right distance (underneath the kettle).
- Temperature Gauge stopped working: Replace the temperature gauge. (Safety issue: the tech should not operate without a temperature gauge)
Tools required: Tank cleaning rod or 14 inch screwdriver or 3 pry bar set, gloves, limonene cleaning fluid
Asphalt heater (IR)
- IR wheels break: Replace with spare wheels. Report and turn in broken wheels to the branch manager for future repairs and replacement.
- The heater is not working/ heating at all/ getting fired=> Regulator stopped working:
Blankets failed (open flame, popping noises) Unbolt the blanket, drop the can, replace the blanket, add the gasket back on top and bolt it back into place. Resume the job. Machine heating unevenly or heating slowly: Check if all the screws are in place and tight. Place wind guards around the heater to drive the heat appropriately.
Tools required: Wrenches, socket set, screwdrivers, replacement spare part, rags, relevant nuts & bolts.
Asphalt recycler - also called “oven” or “cooker”
- Button on Valve (on old models) has to be pressed down at all times for the recycler to work.
- IR wheels break: Replace with spare wheels. Report and turn in broken wheels to the branch manager for future repairs and replacement.

Equipment in the field- Call Operations Immediately and seek professional help
Operations and technicians must work together to finish the job. The technician must always call the Operations team immediately if they run into any issues.
The technician MUST stay at the job until they’ve communicated with the Operations Team and wait until they get further instructions.
If roller frame, hydraulics or the engine fails and the tech cannot fix the unit, operations must advise the technician to
- Return to the yard to swap the roller & finish the job, if the tech is close to the yard OR
- Rent a plate compactor to finish the job, if the tech is away from the yard OR
- Worst case scenario: Reschedule the job
For the following issues, the technician must call Operations and seek professional help. They cannot troubleshoot the problem on their own.
Rollers
- Roller Frame (Welder Help is needed: Call Operations immediately)
Belts worn down and needs to be replaced (Mechanic help is recommended) Carburetor dirty: If the carburetor is too dirty, it might need to be taken to a mechanic for further cleaning.
- Roller Frame (Welder Help is needed: Call Operations immediately)
